The Standard IVF Process vs. ICSI

In standard In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), thousands of healthy sperm are placed in a dish next to the egg, and one sperm naturally fertilizes the egg. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a highly specialized micro-manipulation technique where our expert embryologist selects a single healthy sperm and injects it directly into the egg using a microscopic needle.

When is ICSI Specifically Recommended?

While IVF is excellent for general infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, or ovulatory concerns, ICSI is the procedure of choice for:

  • Severe Male Infertility: Low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal morphology.
  • Failed Fertilization: If a couple had previous IVF cycles where fertilization failed to occur.
  • Surgically Retrieved Sperm: When sperm must be collected directly from the testicles (via TESA/PESA).
  • Using Frozen Eggs: Thawed eggs have a hardened outer shell, making standard fertilization difficult.

Which Procedure Offers Better Success?

For couples facing male factor infertility, ICSI offers significantly higher fertilization rates compared to standard IVF. However, our medical director, Dr. Monica Sachdeva, always evaluates your medical history to recommend the most honest, ethical path without pushing unnecessary procedures.
