Screening Embryos for Genetic Integrity
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is an advanced laboratory procedure performed during an IVF cycle. It involves taking a few cells from a Day 5 embryo (blastocyst) and analyzing its genetic makeup before it is transferred. This allows our specialists to select only genetically healthy embryos, boosting implantation and reducing miscarriage rates.
The Three Types of PGT Screens
Depending on your family history, we perform three different types of PGT:
- PGT-A (Aneuploidy): Screens for abnormal chromosome counts (like Down Syndrome). Recommended for women over 35 or repeated failed IVF cycles.
- PGT-M (Monogenic/Single Gene): Screens for specific inherited disorders (like Thalassemia, Cystic Fibrosis) if parents are carriers.
- PGT-SR (Structural Rearrangements): Screens for structural chromosome issues to prevent implantation failures.
Is PGT Safe for the Embryo?
Yes. The biopsy is performed on Day 5, taking cells from the outer layer (trophectoderm) that will form the placenta, leaving the inner cell mass (which forms the baby) untouched. The embryos are frozen safely using vitrification while genetic reports are generated.
