PGT with IVF: Genetic Testing Costs and Questions to Ask

Key Takeaways

  • PGT checks embryo cells for specific genetic or chromosome findings before transfer.
  • Your bill may include biopsy, laboratory testing, freezing, storage and a later transfer.
  • PGT is not necessary for every couple and cannot guarantee a healthy baby.
  • Ask about the reason for testing, its limits and the full written estimate.

The IVF PGT testing cost can feel confusing when you are already budgeting for medicines, scans and egg collection. Before paying for testing, you deserve to understand what it may tell you, what it cannot tell you, and whether it could change your treatment plan.

PGT with IVF: Genetic Testing Costs and Questions to Ask

At Pravi Global IVF in Lajpat Nagar, we encourage you to bring your questions and previous reports. There is no need to agree to an additional test simply because its name sounds reassuring.

Start with one question: “What specific concern are we testing for in our case?” The answer should guide the discussion about both treatment and money.

What does PGT actually test?

Preimplantation genetic testing, or PGT, involves testing a small sample of cells from an embryo created through IVF. It is usually done at the blastocyst stage, commonly around day five to seven of embryo development.

A trained embryologist removes cells from the outer layer, which mainly contributes to the placenta. Embryos are usually frozen while the sample is analysed. Testing does not check every cell or every possible health condition.

Different tests answer different questions

  • PGT-A: Screens for extra or missing chromosomes. It does not screen for all inherited diseases.
  • PGT-M: Tests for a particular single-gene condition when a relevant genetic change has been identified in the family.
  • PGT-SR: Checks for chromosome imbalances linked to certain structural rearrangements, such as a parental translocation.

For PGT-M, the laboratory may need genetic reports and samples from you or relatives before IVF begins. Developing a family-specific test can add preparation time and expense.

Who might be advised to consider PGT?

PGT may be discussed when there is a known inherited condition or chromosome rearrangement. PGT-A may also come up with increasing maternal age, previous pregnancy losses or unsuccessful treatment, but these histories do not automatically mean it is needed.

Routine PGT-A has not been shown to improve the overall chance of a baby for every IVF patient. It may help embryo selection in some situations, but it does not improve an embryo’s underlying quality or create more embryos.

Your doctor will decide whether to recommend testing after reviewing your history, likely embryo numbers and genetic reports. You should also understand the option of proceeding without it.

IVF PGT testing cost: What should your estimate include?

There is no single meaningful price without knowing the type of PGT and the laboratory’s billing method. Ask for a dated, itemised estimate rather than comparing only the headline package amount.

An IVF PGT testing cost quote may cover genetic analysis alone. It may exclude the IVF cycle, embryo biopsy and frozen embryo transfer. The table below helps you check those boundaries.

Cost componentWhat to clarify
IVF treatment and medicinesAre scans, stimulation medicines, egg collection and anaesthesia included?
Fertilisation and embryo cultureIs ICSI advised, and is culture to the blastocyst stage included?
Embryo biopsyIs the fee per embryo, per cycle or for a batch?
Genetic laboratory testingWhich PGT test is included, and are there minimum charges?
Family-specific preparationAre parental tests, relative samples or PGT-M test development extra?
Freezing and storageHow much storage is included, and when do renewal charges begin?
Frozen embryo transferAre transfer medicines, monitoring and the procedure billed separately?
Inconclusive resultsWould repeat testing or another biopsy attract charges?

For example, a quote covering testing of a fixed number of embryos may not decrease if fewer embryos reach the biopsy stage. Another laboratory may charge per embryo. Neither arrangement should come as a surprise after egg collection.

Ask what is payable if no embryo is suitable for biopsy or transfer. Keep the written estimate, consent documents and laboratory terms together so you can refer to them later.

Questions to ask before consenting

You do not have to remember everything during the appointment. Keep these questions on your phone, and ask for explanations in everyday language.

  • Which type of PGT are you recommending, and why?
  • How could the result change our embryo transfer plan?
  • What benefit is realistic for someone with our history?
  • Which laboratory will analyse the samples?
  • Will a genetic counsellor explain the findings?
  • Could we have no embryo recommended for transfer?
  • What are the risks of biopsy, freezing and thawing?
  • What happens if we choose IVF without PGT?

If ICSI is proposed, ask why it is being advised for your testing protocol. It involves injecting a sperm into an egg; it is not itself a genetic test. Read about ICSI treatment in Lajpat Nagar before discussing it.

Understanding results and their limits

Some results are straightforward; others need careful interpretation. An inconclusive report means the sample did not provide a clear answer. It does not automatically mean that the embryo has a genetic problem.

A mosaic result suggests a mixture of chromosome findings in the sampled cells. It may not represent the whole embryo. Decisions about such embryos require specialist genetic counselling and discussion of the laboratory’s methods and clinic policy.

  • PGT can produce incorrect results; it is not completely accurate.
  • Biopsy and freezing carry a small risk of embryo damage or loss.
  • An embryo with a reassuring result may still not implant or may miscarry.
  • Pregnancy screening and discussions about diagnostic testing remain necessary after PGT.

Ask how results will be explained before any decision about embryo storage or use. PGT must not be used to choose a baby’s sex for non-medical reasons; sex selection is prohibited in India.

Planning your visits from Delhi NCR

Pravi Global IVF is at E-3, 3rd Floor, Lajpat Nagar 2, New Delhi. Lajpat Nagar metro station is on the Violet and Pink lines, making metro travel a practical option for many couples.

People coming from Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad or Gurugram often use connecting metro routes, then an auto or cab for the last stretch. If you drive, allow flexibility depending on traffic, especially around the Lajpat Nagar market area.

Bring previous IVF summaries, genetic reports and details of any relevant family condition. Ask which appointments require both partners. Our IVF treatment information can help you prepare for the wider treatment discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PGT included in a standard IVF package?

Do not assume it is. Ask whether the IVF PGT testing cost includes biopsy, genetic analysis, freezing, storage and transfer, or only some of these services.

Does every embryo get tested?

Not necessarily. Only embryos reaching a suitable stage and meeting biopsy criteria may be sampled. Some fertilised eggs will not develop far enough for testing.

Can PGT guarantee a healthy baby?

No. PGT checks particular genetic or chromosome findings within its scope. It cannot exclude every condition, prevent all pregnancy complications or guarantee a live birth.

Will we still need tests during pregnancy?

Yes. Routine antenatal care remains necessary. Your doctor and genetic counsellor will discuss prenatal screening and diagnostic options, such as CVS or amniocentesis, based on your circumstances.

What if we have only one embryo?

Discuss the trade-offs before biopsy. Testing may still be relevant for a known inherited condition, while the value of PGT-A needs individual review. Your doctor will advise after considering the risks and alternatives.
