ICSI Treatment: Overcoming Male Infertility with Precision Embryology

What is ICSI and How Does it Help?

Sometimes, standard IVF is not enough. In standard IVF, we put eggs and thousands of sperm together in a dish and hope they fertilize naturally. But if the sperm cannot swim well, or if there are very few of them, fertilization might fail. That is where Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) comes in. ICSI is a high-precision lab technique. Under a powerful microscope, our embryologist selects a single, healthy sperm and injects it directly into the egg using a microscopic needle. It bypasses the natural barriers, giving the sperm a direct path to fertilization. At Pravi IVF in South Delhi, we use this micro-assisted technique to help couples overcome severe male factor infertility. You can read about semen diagnostic tests in our Male Infertility Treatment guide.

Who Needs ICSI Treatment?

ICSI is highly useful for couples facing specific sperm issues. We recommend it if the male partner has a very low sperm count, poor sperm movement, or abnormally shaped sperm. It is also essential if sperm had to be collected surgically from the testicles (using procedures like TESA or PESA), as these sperm are often immature and cannot fertilize an egg on their own. Additionally, if you had a previous IVF cycle where fertilization failed completely, we use ICSI in the next cycle to prevent that from happening again. It is a highly effective way to make sure your eggs have the best chance of fertilizing. For detail on location access, see our Best IVF Centre in Lajpat Nagar page.

The Precision and Success of ICSI

Because we choose the single most active, healthy-looking sperm and place it directly inside the egg, ICSI has very high fertilization rates—usually around 70% to 80%. According to study databases from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), ICSI has been key in resolving severe oligospermia issues globally. The procedure takes place inside our Class-100 cleanroom embryology lab, using advanced micro-manipulator tools. Our embryologists are highly trained in this technique, which requires a steady hand and years of clinical experience. Once fertilization is successful, the embryos grow in our incubators for a few days, and we monitor them closely before selecting the strongest one for transfer into the mother's uterus. We manage this process using our automated Electronic Witness System to protect sample security.

Support for Male Reproductive Health

Male factor issues contribute to nearly half of all infertility cases, yet it is a topic that is rarely talked about openly. At Pravi IVF, we want to remove the stigma. We provide a private, comfortable space where couples can discuss male fertility scans and treatments with our team. We have uploaded a detailed procedure video of ICSI under the microscope on our YouTube channel (search "Pravi IVF ICSI Embryology Demonstration") and share quick tips on Instagram with tags #PraviIVF and #MaleInfertilityDelhi. We offer detailed semen testing, advanced sperm preparation, and micro-manipulation treatments like ICSI to help you build your family. If you are struggling with semen parameters or have had failed IVF cycles, get in touch with our Lajpat Nagar clinic to explore how ICSI can help you achieve your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How does ICSI differ from traditional IVF?
In traditional IVF, thousands of sperm are placed near the egg in a dish to let fertilization happen naturally. In ICSI, a single selected sperm is directly injected into the egg's cytoplasm using a micro-needle.
  2. What is the fertilization success rate with ICSI?
ICSI typically achieves fertilization rates of 70% to 80% per injected egg. This makes it highly successful for couples with severe sperm abnormalities.
  3. Is ICSI safe for the baby?
Yes. Long-term studies show that children conceived via ICSI do not experience higher rates of developmental abnormalities compared to standard IVF or natural conception.
  4. Can surgically retrieved sperm be used for ICSI?
Yes. Sperm retrieved via surgical techniques (like TESA or PESA) must be used with ICSI because they are often immature and cannot penetrate the egg outer shell naturally.
  5. How do you select the best sperm for the injection?
Our senior embryologists screen the sperm under high-power magnification, selecting the single most active, morphologically normal sperm based on shape and movement.
