Clarifying Two Different Paths to Parenthood
For couples starting their fertility research, terms like IVF and surrogacy can sometimes become blurred. While they are closely connected—surrogacy almost always involves the clinical process of IVF—they represent two very different medical and emotional paths. Understanding the distinction helps couples choose the right direction for their family.
What is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)?
In standard IVF, eggs are retrieved from the female partner (or a donor) and fertilized with sperm in our laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred back into the female partner's uterus, who carries the pregnancy to term. The biological mother and the birth mother are the same person.
What is Gestational Surrogacy?
Surrogacy is a pathway where another woman (the gestational carrier or surrogate) carries the pregnancy for the intended parents. The IVF process is used to create the embryo using the intended parents' (or donor's) eggs and sperm, meaning the surrogate has no genetic connection to the baby. This is recommended when the intended mother has severe uterine issues, medical conditions making pregnancy dangerous, or repeated IVF failures.
