Can You Perform IVF with Your Own Eggs at Any Age?
While the legal limit for IVF in India is 50 years, the medical viability of using your own eggs declines much earlier. Egg quantity and quality are heavily dependent on maternal age.
The Decline of Egg Quality and Quantity
Women are born with a finite number of eggs. This ovarian reserve decreases progressively with age, accelerating significantly after the age of 35. Beyond age 40, the likelihood of genetic abnormalities (aneuploidy) in eggs increases, leading to lower fertilization rates and higher miscarriage rates.
Optimal Age Guidelines
- Under 35: High success rates, excellent egg quality.
- 35 to 40: Moderate success; preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is often recommended.
- Above 40: Lower success rates with own eggs. Donor eggs are frequently suggested to achieve a healthy pregnancy.
